Defne Huran Persian, b. 1985

Inspired by traditional calligraphy since 2018, Defne Huran has been working on Abstract painting. Her oeuvre is very vibrant yet delicate, and through this careful balance between Eastern and Western school of painting, she managed to combine Abstract Painting with Islamic Traditional Calligraphy.

Defne Huran is one of Miart Gallery London highlights. The artist was born in 1985 in Iran where she finished primary and high school. Although she was chosen for Tehran University of Fine Arts, she decided to continue her education in Turkey. She graduated from Marmara University as an Art Teacher in 2012. In 2017, she completed her master's degree in Fashion Design at Haliç University.

She creates her works with large impasto brushstrokes and mixed media materials (like woolen thread and cardboard cut-outs) to write the calligraphies. The calligraphies' uniqueness becomes noticeable through the enlarged size of the writing and expressive brushwork, which is sometimes highlighted even more through the paint wash.
