With its striking simplicity and raw emotional impact, 'Girl with Balloon' has become one of Banksy’s most iconic and universally recognised works. First appearing as a graffiti mural outside a Shoreditch shop in 2002, and later reappearing on London’s Southbank accompanied by the phrase “There Is Always Hope,” the artwork depicts a small child reaching toward a heart-shaped balloon. As the only splash of colour in an otherwise monochrome scene, the balloon becomes a fragile symbol of innocence, love, freedom, and hope. Deliberately ambiguous, the image invites viewers to interpret whether the girl is reaching to catch the balloon or watching it drift away, echoing themes of loss, longing, and the fleeting nature of childhood.
