'Flying Copper' is one of Banksy’s most enduring and provocative images, depicting a heavily armed riot police officer with angel wings and a bright yellow smiley face. Both playful and unsettling, the work contrasts childlike symbols of innocence and happiness with threatening symbols of state control. Through his pairing of intimidating riot gear with a cheerful expression, Banksy highlights the tension between appearance and authority, and questions how power can be disguised behind a friendly façade. The angel wings add another layer of irony, challenging viewers to rethink their assumptions about policing, morality, and the blurred line between peacekeeping and intimidation.
