In 'HMV,' Banksy offers a reimagining of the iconic British music trademark, a white dog aiming a rocket launcher at a gramophone. Inspired by Francis Barraud’s 1899 painting of a dog named Nipper listening to a phonograph, the original image symbolised loyalty to tradition and the voice of authority. Banksy’s version, by contrast, is a critique of the outdated music industry and the generational power structures it represents. The dog’s defiant stance, weapon pointed at the past, transforms a nostalgic symbol into one of rebellion and reinvention. First stencilled on the streets of Bristol and later on the courtyard walls of Cargo nightclub in London’s Shoreditch, 'HMV' is a powerful commentary on cultural change in the digital era.
