Depicting two elderly ladies sat in armchairs, drinking tea and knitting jumpers emblazoned with the slogans “Punks Not Dead” and “Thug For Life,” 'Grannies' invites the viewer to question their assumptions surrounding age, rebellion and tradition. Set against a bright pink background, Banksy uses contrast to heighten the works message, suggesting that defiance can be quiet, generational, and passed down lovingly like a handmade gift. Whether interpreted as a nod to the subversive spirit of older generations or a satire on the domestication of counterculture, 'Grannies' is an example of Banksy’s ability to mix humour, politics, and heart in one image.
