"Nature is the art of God."
Born in Colón, Panamá, in 1976, Thannyo De Freitas Navarro grew up in an environment where artistic expression and a deep connection to the natural world were central to daily life. His early dedication to art earned him recognition in numerous national competitions and a scholarship to pursue formal studies in Panama City. He went on to obtain a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Panama, specialising in visual arts with a focus on drawing and painting. Today, his work is exhibited internationally in Panama, New York City, El Salvador, São Paulo, and the Dominican Republic.
Thannyo’s contemporary landscapes reveal a profound reverence for nature, capturing the serenity and spiritual balance found within it. His meticulous technique—marked by sharp detail, seamless surfaces, and naturalistic colour—imbues his paintings with a near-photographic clarity, reminiscent of Cuban painter Tomás Sánchez. Yet beneath their realism lies a dreamlike sensibility: ethereal atmospheres and floating perspectives that invite quiet contemplation.
In the face of Panama’s ongoing deforestation, Thannyo’s depictions of untouched forests and boundless horizons can be seen as both a meditation on beauty and a lament for what is being lost. For him, nature is not only a source of inspiration but also a sacred space for reflection and renewal. Through his work, he encourages transparency, vulnerability, and self-connection—values he sees mirrored in the natural world. Each painting becomes a meditative offering, inviting viewers to rediscover harmony, tenderness for the earth, and a deeper awareness of themselves.
