Robert Strati American, b. 1970

"The “Fragmented” series was actually the result of an accident when my wife dropped a plate that we inherited from her mom and it fragmented into a number of pieces.

When I eventually noticed the bird and the bridge motifs in the plate, it just sparked a vision of the world beyond the fragment itself.

This speaks to the reality of so many things coming from mistakes and the power of accidents, if they’re embraced from a positive perspective."

Robert Strati is an American contemporary artist known for transforming broken porcelain plates into intricate mixed-media artworks that explore movement, memory, and renewal. Through his signature Fragmented series, Strati reconstructs shattered ceramics into dynamic compositions where birds, ships, landscapes, and natural forms emerge from the original patterns and negative spaces of the porcelain, transforming accidental destruction into elegant sculptural narratives.

The inspiration for Strati’s practice began when a treasured porcelain plate inherited from his wife’s mother was accidentally broken. Rather than discarding the fragments, Strati discovered the potential within the shattered pieces, imagining the decorative imagery extending beyond the surface of the plate into three-dimensional space. This approach has become central to his work, where fragments are carefully rearranged to reveal unexpected scenes of beauty and harmony.

Born in Boston in 1970 and raised in Columbus, Ohio, Strati developed his artistic foundation through studying Art History at Ohio State University. His practice combines a deep appreciation for traditional craftsmanship with a contemporary approach to sculpture, exploring the relationship between material, storytelling, and transformation.

Strati’s work has gained international recognition through representation by galleries including Fremin Gallery in New York and Galleri Christoffer Egelund in Copenhagen. His artworks have been presented at major fairs including Art Miami and Hamptons Fine Art Fair, alongside exhibitions such as the Royal Academy of Arts in London. His porcelain compositions continue to attract collectors drawn to their technical precision, emotional resonance, and unique transformation of everyday objects into contemporary artworks.
