Self-taught painter Florian Eymann was born in Auxerre, France in 1980. He works with oil paints, preparing his canvases first by collaging and editing base images. Eymann experiments with form and content by deconstructing and reinterpreting faces of the traditional portraiture, recalling the practice of artists across all of art history, from Francis Bacon to Caravaggio.
Eymann, whose works have been exhibited at New York Art Fair and at SCOPE during Art Basel, paints inspired by history’s great oil paintings. In his portraits, vegetal elements and still lives are a recurring element and he is fascinated by the possibility to create imaginary flowers and unlikely combinations. His approach to the techniques of the old masters experiments with how they achieved specific lighting effects or palette.
Eymann is an artist who prioritises imagination by partially camouflaging his subjects. His intricate and enigmatic paintings present the spectator with dynamic tension between construction and deconstruction, and revelation and mystery.
