Gürkan Pehlivan Turkish, b. 1970

Gürkan Pehlivan started his career as a designer and stylist in the leather clothing industry where he worked for 20 years. In 1999, he met a calligrapher and marble craftsman Fuat Başar, and started to practice calligraphy writing. As a result of Gürkan Pehlivan’s natural talent and his teacher’s encouragement, he started to teach his own students shortly after a 4 months probation period.

As a result of Gürkan Pehlivan’s natural talent and his teacher’s encouragement, he started to teach his own students shortly after a 4 months probation period. In 2003 Gürkan Pehlivan received a sülüs-nesih certificate from Fuat Başar and a celi-divani certificate from Calligrapher Turan Sevgili.

 

At the moment he continues working in his workshop in Beyoğlu Traditional Arts Academy near Little Hagia Sophia Mosque in Istanbul. Gürkan Pehlivan has developed his unique style in creating large-scale Hilye-i Şerifs. The term hilya denotes both a visual form in Ottoman art and a religious genre of Ottoman Turkish literature, each dealing with the physical description of Muhammad. Hilya literally means "ornament".

 

The artist participated in many domestic and abroad exhibitions in Washington, London, Qatar Doha, Dubai, Vatican, and Erbil. His works are displayed in various Islamic religious and secular art centers - in Humpback Mustafa Pasha Mosque, Kadırga Bostanali Mosque, and Hilye-i Şerif Museum in Istanbul.

 

Gürkan Pehlivan's Hilye-i Şerifs were sold at Sotheby's (London | 25 Apr 2012 | Arts of Islamic World).
