In 'Morons (sepia)' Banksy critiques the art market itself through his depiction of an auctioneer conducting a sale to a room packed with bidders, and a framed canvas that reads “I can’t believe you actually buy this shit.” Based on the historical moment when Van Gogh’s Sunflowers achieved £22.5 million at Christie’s on 30 March 1987, setting the record price for any work of art at auction, 'Morons' exposes the contradictions of a market that now also bids fiercely for Banksy’s own work. Originally part of the Barely Legal print set, this sepia edition is one of Banksy’s most iconic critiques of the art world’s obsession with value over meaning.
