In 'Strawberry Donut' Banksy combines humour with social commentary by placing a giant pink donut, complete with colourful sprinkles, atop a police van, escorted by officers on motorbikes. With its flashing lights and formal convoy, the scene parodies the way society protects power and privilege. Referencing American consumer culture, the stereotype of police and donuts, and even the urban legend that in JFK’s “Ich bin ein Berliner” (I am a Berliner) speech he accidentally referred to himself as a jelly donut, the work invites us to question who and what we choose to protect. Furthermore, released in an edition of 299, the number is a nod to the 299 Krispy Kreme stores that closed in 2007.
